How to find local investors

Local investors know your market, can visit in person and often move faster. Here is how to find the family offices among them.

1. Start with your state and nearest cities

Open your state page and the city pages around you. Offices in suburbs count toward the state list, so do not skip it.

2. Check public filings

Multi-family offices that manage client assets usually register as investment advisers. The SEC’s Investment Adviser Public Disclosure site lets you search by firm name and see the registered address. Smaller advisers register with the state securities regulator instead.

3. Read each office’s own website

The stated focus on a list page is a summary. The office’s own words tell you more about fit, and some offices say how they want to receive opportunities.

4. Use local networks

Accountants, estate lawyers, bankers and local angel groups often know which families invest locally. Ask for advice before you ask for an introduction.

5. Be specific when you reach out

Say why this office, in one or two sentences tied to what it states publicly. A short, relevant note works better than a long deck.
