What is a family office?

A family office is a private organization that manages the investments and often the wider financial affairs of a wealthy family.

What family offices do

Investing is usually the core job. Many offices also handle tax, estate planning, philanthropy, accounting, property and family governance. Some are a few people. Some employ large investment teams.

Single family office or multi-family office

A single family office serves one family. A multi-family office serves several families and is usually a commercial firm that charges fees. In the United States, the SEC’s family office rule, adopted in 2011, sets out when an office that serves one family is excluded from investment adviser registration.

How we decide an office’s type

We use how the office describes itself. If it does not say, we leave the type blank. See how tags are assigned.
