Family office questions

How many family offices exist worldwide?

Short answer

There is no reliable worldwide census of family offices. The total depends on what counts as an office, since some families have dedicated teams, while others use a multifamily office or outsource much of the work. Treat any global figure as an estimate, not a precise count.

Why there is no exact count

There is no single registry that captures every family office around the world. Many operate privately, and some families do not use the label “family office” for the people and services managing their affairs. Definitions also vary: a single family office serves one family, while a multifamily office serves several. Some families have a dedicated internal team; others rely on a small staff and outside specialists.

That means published totals are best understood as estimates. Before relying on a number, check what the source includes, such as single family offices only, multifamily offices, or investment entities that have a legal structure in a particular location. A fund formed offshore, for example, does not necessarily mean a staffed family office operates there.

What the count means in practice

For a family, the worldwide total is usually less useful than knowing where relevant offices are based, what they do, and how they are structured. Family offices tend to be connected to the family’s home base and the places where its members, businesses, and advisers operate. Local conditions matter: a location may host financial institutions or fund vehicles without having many family office teams serving families on the ground.

When researching the market, define the group you want to understand. Are you looking for single family offices, multifamily offices, or a particular region or service area? Then compare sources that use similar definitions. A directory can help identify organizations, but it will not capture every private office or confirm how each one makes decisions.

For planning purposes, use a range or directional estimate and keep the definition alongside it. That is more useful than treating one global figure as definitive. The count can help frame the size of the sector, but it does not tell you whether a particular office is a fit, how it evaluates opportunities, or whether it is active in a given market.
