Family office questions
How long does a family office take to make an investment decision?
Short answer
There is no standard timeline. A family office may decide quickly when the opportunity fits its priorities and the facts are clear, while a complex direct investment can take much longer. The pace often depends on due diligence, who must approve the deal, and when the investment committee meets.
There is no fixed clock for a family office investment decision. The timeline depends on the type of investment, how familiar the office is with the opportunity, and how many people need to weigh in. A liquid investment handled by an established team may move faster than a direct investment that requires deeper review and family approval.
What shapes the timeline
Start by finding out how the office makes decisions. Some families delegate authority to a CIO or investment team. Others reserve final approval for the family or an investment committee. Committee schedules vary too: a team might meet daily, weekly, monthly, or quarterly, depending on its portfolio and how often decisions are needed. If an opportunity arrives just after a meeting, it may wait for the next one unless the office has a process for urgent decisions.
Due diligence is another major factor. The office may need to assess the people involved, the business or asset, the financials, the proposed terms, and the risks. A direct investment can require coordination with other investors and careful review of governance and minority rights. Missing information or unclear answers can add time.
How to keep the process moving
If you are presenting an opportunity, ask early who makes the decision, what materials they need, and whether there is a scheduled review date. Provide a concise package with the investment case, key risks, financial information, proposed terms, and answers to diligence questions. Be direct about deadlines and explain which ones are firm, while leaving room for the office to complete its review.
Follow up at agreed points rather than sending repeated general check-ins. If the office raises questions, respond clearly and identify any information that will take longer to obtain. You can also ask whether the opportunity fits the office’s investment priorities and whether anything in the process is still unresolved.
A fast answer is not always a positive signal, and a slower process does not necessarily mean a lack of interest. Focus on understanding the decision path and making the information easy to evaluate. The family office should have enough time to reach a considered decision without being pushed into a process that does not suit its governance or diligence needs.
